Rick Boyles

President, General Teamsters Local 959

Rick Boyles

Born in Fairmont, West Virginia, Rick is 49 years old and makes his home in Fairbanks with Chris, and children Shannon, Jesse, and Ricky.

Rick moved to Anchorage and joined Teamsters Local 959 in June 1975. He moved to Fairbanks in 1991 to work out of the Fairbanks hall after living in Anchorage for 16 years.

While working in the construction and communication industries, Rick served as a construction shop steward for seven years. He was appointed a business representative for Local 959 in March 1991 and has served in that capacity for the last 15 years.

Rick has served Local 959 as a business representative, construction industry coordinator, contract negotiator, trustee for the Training Trust, and tournament director for the JLC Charity Golf Tournament.

Rick's responsibilities as a business representative have included monitoring:

  • the Trans Alaska Pipeline System Construction and Maintenance Agreement;
  • the North Slope Petroleum Industry Agreement; all local Fairbanks construction agreements;
  • collective bargaining agreements for Usibelli Coal Mine, Denali National Park bus drivers;
  • Fairbanks ready-mix industry agreements;
  • United Parcel Service (the Fairbanks Center);
  • and local refuse agreements.

In addition to attending the University of West Virginia, Rick has the following certificates from the George Meany Center for Labor Studies:

  • Craft of Negotiating
  • Negotiating and Writing Contract Language
  • Organizing in the Construction Industry
  • Mutual Gains and Interest Based Bargaining
  • International Foundation for Jointly Managed Training and Education Funds

Rick has also received a certificate from Harvard University on Mutual Gains and Interest Based Bargaining.

Rick comes from a family of members dedicated to Labor, including his father, Richard Boyles (principal officer for Local 789 for 13 years), grandfather, Tony Zabolotny (45-year member of the United Mine Workers), four uncles who were also members of the UMW; and grandfather, Carson Boyles (union member and principal officer of Fairmont Painters Local for 35 years).
